Freedom in America faces an existential threat from people who claim to follow Jesus, yet embrace a drive for political power, which is antithetical to Jesus' mission. Rather than growing in their love for God and people, too many American Christians have embraced a form of Christianity that demonizes and dehumanizes those who view faith, political issues, and the world differently, rationalizes the crimes and sins of religious and political leaders who have been made into idols, and actively works toward oppression for some rather than freedom for all. This statement expresses a renewed commitment to democracy and the values that Jesus embodied while He walked among us.

“We face a crisis of democracy in this election and a test of faith in this country. Mere political responses to the unprecedented moment are not enough. There must also be a theological response. In late 2023 a diverse group of scholars and religious leaders began to draft a short statement called Christian Faith and Democracy to address these dual crises.”
